Planning permission has been granted for a new Aldi supermarket on Metges Road in Johnstown close to the town’s shopping centre.
Byrnell Developments were granted planning permission for a single storey retail food store 1,840 sqm (1,315 sqm net retail) including an off-license, an external service area, and a car park for 89 carts to be used by German retailer Aldi.
The same developer has also been granted planning permission for 45 social and affordable apartments on an adjacent site
“The form of the Aldi store has evolved over the years that they have been in Ireland, and the size of the retail area has increased by over 70pc during that period,” according to a design statement.
“The proposed store is the most recent iteration of evolving design.”
A previous proposal which led to protests in 2019 by locals involved 104 apartments and 1,500sqm of commercial space .
Meath County Council granted planning permission to the plans subject to 23 conditions.
