The annual credit you can claim for a single person is €1,000,and €2,000 for a jointly assessed couple.
The estimated cost to the Exchequer was €363m in 2024. These numbers include both PAYE and self assessed taxpayers. This was a significant jump from 2023 when 262,205 renters claimed the credit at a cost of €315m. The Department Of Finance estimates that upwards of 400,000 renters are eligible for the credit, Tanaiste Simon Harris has indicated that increasing it this year is under consideration, stating “ we’ve committed to keeping it for the lifetime of the government, and yeah, instinctively I’d like to see it rise.”
